Asian Couture Week

The Vivienne Westwood/ Dans La Vie fashion film Oyster starring yours truly was screened at London Fashion Week last year to general acclaim, but I'm not at LFW this year- probably just as well, as I'm already up to my eyeballs with organising photo shoot trips all over the UK, USA and Asia!

While I was shooting in Singapore last November I was contacted by the director of Oyster, the Head of Fashion Film at Nick Knight's SHOWstudio and my good friend Marie Schuller. I couldn't believe we just so happened to both be in Singapore at the same time! She was shooting a fashion film about Asian Couture Week for SHOWstudio and invited me along to hang out and enjoy the show with her and her friend Sue.

How could I say no?! We got great seats to see some of Asia's premiere couturiers and their work was nothing short of jaw-dropping!

This is me wandering around the venue before even the VIPs were let in to see what I could see...

Trying to figure out if I could possibly make off with that red dress without getting caught. All exits guarded by bouncers :(

I changed out of my little summer dress (Singapore is HOT in November!) and into latex for the party, of course... I got snapped and papped about five million times, which made me assume that I'd be able to find at least one photo online to share with you, but apparently not.

I can share some photos of the actual runway show though; it was really spectacular. This was my favourite of the designers, Guo Pei, China's most extravagant couturier:

So, enjoy LFW if you are there this year, but don't get too Western-centric with fashion. Asian designers are equally amazing and they know how to put on a show!

Home improvements, Anita style!

Well, the renovation of my 1930s apartment is well and truly underway! My landlord is a fan of plain white walls, contemporary pine furniture and minimalist decor (ugh! Yuk!) so there was plenty to do to turn it back into something like the charming little pad it (possibly) once was! I must be one of the few women in the world who consider a "home improvement" to be taking one's home back in time instead of modernising it! It is surprising how sensitive we are to our surroundings. I feel so much happier, more relaxed and at home in my own home now that it is starting to feel less like someone else's house and more like my own life-size doll's house!

The hallway and landing have been repainted and I have replaced the dusty linen shades with glittering chandeliers I had imported from Germany. There is a matching third one over my bed. It makes very pretty, sparkling patterns on the ceiling, especially when the light is dimmed!

Photo Darren Birkin and I took on my landing yesterday! I did all the styling, of course! The bra was made from an original 1950s spiral stitched bullet bra design from What Katie Did and the shoes are from Fabulously Fetish.

I decorated the kitchen and bathroom with a 1950s theme, to balance vintage glamour with modern conveniences. 1930s would simply have been too old-fashioned for these rooms, which I have to use and live in- I would not have been able to have a fitted kitchen with a washing machine or microwave oven, for a start!

I hope to do a little photo shoot or two with vintage 1950s dresses in the kitchen once it's had its last little details finished, but in the meantime, here is a little snap I took of its progress on my phone while the decorator was having a coffee break!

Marilyn watches over my Kilner jars! She was an enthusiastic cook and even wrote her own book of (fairly complicated) recipes. The space on the end of the shelf is where the champagne will live ;)

My decorator will be back in two weeks, so that's my deadline to gather the paint and vintage wallpaper for the living room. I like a challenge!! I have a very clear idea of how it should look in my mind, but it would probably sound awful to most people if I described it! For one thing, I want there to be an exotic animal motif, à la 1930s China. Two of my holy grails for this room are a really full-tailed peacock to perch on the TV cabinet and a vintage bear or leopard rug in front of the fire, like this:

This instantly makes me think of The Munsters' house, which was my dream home when I was 18!

I'm not really sure where my fascination with taxidermy comes from because I hated it when I was a little girl. I've always been a big animal-lover and the idea of having dead animals scattered about the place just didn't appeal. Perhaps it's because since then I have spent so much time watching old films and looking at old glamour photographs from the 1920s - 50s, which so often involve taxidermy.

My attitude also changed when I found out that these days, people aren't allowed to kill animals in order to stuff them- modern taxidermy happens after the animal has died from natural causes, even from being hit by a car. In that way I think it's quite a beautiful thing to preserve that animal's natural beauty and spirit. I don't have a problem with antique taxidermy either as I figure that whoever potentially unethically created it is no longer with us and thus cannot profit from my purchase!

I know, I know, I'm probably not the most inoffensive person in the world. I like taxidermy, I like wearing certain furs, there are hundreds of photos of me smoking out there (even though I hate cigarette smoke, a cigarette in an antique holder is a classic accessory for glamour photos!), I like bondage and submission and fuel-guzzling vintage cars and sexy lingerie and prancing around in the great outdoors in the buff. But wouldn't the world be a duller place without all these things? I guess we all have our potentially offensive pleasures!

I don't mean to get on my soapbox, but it can become a little tiring to receive complaints almost every time a photo of me holding a drink, a cigarette, or wearing one my (fake!!) fur stoles appears on the internet.

Still, at least people are looking at my photos, I suppose!

Gosh, that was a bit of a tangent, I'd better sign off now before I witter on any further!!

My New Year's Resolutions

What are your new year's resolutions or goals?

Mine are:

  1. I will visit a country I have never been to before. I'm guessing it will be China and/ or Indonesia, but I'm open to suggestion!
  2. I will go to a gypsy jazz club
  3. I will ensure that my book on freelance modelling, The Ugly Girl's Guide to Becoming a Model, is published the way I want it to be published ;)
  4. I will get better at doing my hair
  5. I will visit Tokyo again and learn to say a few more things in Japanese
  6. I will continue to prioritise healthy eating and sleeping
  7. I will gain a basic understanding of economics. All this talk of "double dip recession" and "recession/ depression" etc is making me feel incredibly stupid as I've been hearing it on the news for years now and still don't know what any of it really means or whose fault it really is
  8. I will get back into the swing of my weekly pilates/ aerobics/ yoga routine, after two months' travelling
  9. I will try and cultivate my brain in the form of classic novels, psychology textbooks, art gallery and museum exhibitions, music and poetry recitals, attending lectures, visiting sites of historical interest etc etc once a week
  10. I will read and actually understand the Wikipedia page on photography. Considering how much time I spend in front of a camera, it is scandalous how little I know about the process behind it!
As we look forward to 2012 and turn our backs on 2011, I leave you with pictures of my butt from a shoot for the Lux Tenebrae catalogue that I did with Adam Robertson :)

Happy New Year, everyone! I'm off to celebrate with Liam. We have nearly two months' worth of catching up to do over a champagne dinner and fireworks over the Thames :D

On location in Hong Kong

I spent 20th November shooting on the 38th floor of a Hong Kong skyscraper, and then for a complete change of pace, the next day I was driven out to a location shoot in the beautiful Hong Kong countryside.

It was just how I imagined Chinese countryside would look- lots of silver-trunked trees with papery, peeling bark, floppy bamboo-like grass and cranes flying over the little rivers and pools of water, with the skyscrapers just visible in the misty distance :)

That evening, I went to Nathan Street, which seemed to be the HK equivalent to Oxford Street, the Ladies' Market and the laser show by the Marina. Hong Kong at night reminds me of Times Square at night. No-one seems to sleep and it's just as bright and busy as in the day. I think you get to know a city better at night, though :)

The shops don't close till 10 pm, which I think is a great idea ;p (I hardly ever get to shop in actual shops anymore as the ones in the UK are always shut by the time I finish shooting.)
I spent lots of time checking out the girls my age eating, shopping and hanging out. Hong Kong street fashion is so cool. I bought two pairs of leggings, some new false lashes (mine are just about disintegrating after being worn nearly every day for who knows how long) and a pair of chocolate brown leather gloves to match my handbag and purse :) The whole lot came to £15 due to my haggling skills ;p

Love the little bows on the gloves <3

The next morning I looked out of the window and said goodbye to the view before spending the day flying- Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur and then Kuala Lumpur to Singapore- ready for the six shoots I have lined up back-to-back in Singapore, starting on Thursday! :D

Banned in China

On my last morning in Kuala Lumpur I got up early to take a snap of the view from my bedroom window then go swimming on the roof of my 34 storey hotel!

Then, breakfast with a view :) Loved the little shot glasses of yoghurt that came with breakfast :)

I visited the Batu Caves with one of my photographers, Roger. It was on the top of my “to do in Asia” list so I got ridiculously overexcited when I saw the huge golden statue from the car window!

It was 272 steps to the top and the temperature was about 35°C̊ but it didn’t seem too bad, especially as the top half of the steps were in the shade. There were people carrying buckets of bricks up, for added holiness, but I just carried my camera and a bottle of water ;)

I was hoping to see some monkeys as per the Wikipeida entry and I wasn’t disappointed because they were EVERYWHERE, probably due to everyone merrily ignoring the “do not feed the monkeys” signs, and resulting in me having audible cuteness overload :D

look at dem

When we got to the top of the steps there was more exotic animal love to be had as an enterprising dude was charging 10 Ringgits a pop to hold a snake. I’ve always wanted to do a proper photo shoot with a big snake; this is as close as I’ve got, so far!

Then I stopped cooing over the cute animals and actually checked out the caves.

I got blessed by this guy in the main temple :) He rubbed some pale grey stuff (ash?) on my forehead, but the mark didn’t come out in any of the pictures.

Soon it was time to have a quick lunch (kueh teow soup- I made a note of the name in case I see it again. Chicken and noodle soup with spring onions and slices of Malaysian fishcakes. Nothing like British fishcakes, more like subtly fish-flavoured tofu) and head to the airport so I could fly to Hong Kong. I took a photo of the sign on the way back because I’m immature.

Despite the soup I got hungry for sugar and caffeine while I was waiting at my gate so I got a latte and a chocolate brownie at the airport cafe. Latte + chocolate + 1970s radical feminist sci-fi novel (can you think of a better genre?) = total indulgence for half an hour ^^

I’ll save my adventures in Hong Kong for another blog, even though I’m in Hong Kong right now, writing this from my room on the 38th floor! I can’t believe I’m behind in my blogging already! I seem to be doing too much each day to be able to have more than one day per blog!

I got a message from Rob Ellis asking if I wanted to shoot this weekend, as by some random quirk of fate, he’s in China right now! I had to say no, unfortunately, just because I’m already completely booked out in Hong Kong this weekend and I fly to Singapore first thing on Monday morning. The only reason I mention it is because he told me that this blog is BANNED in mainland China! Too much p0rn, too much swearing, too much sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll? Who knows?

EDIT: Can you have a “random” quirk of “fate”? Surely fate, by its very definition, would not be random?

I really do burble on without thinking some all most of the time. Ta ta.
