What models eat at Christmas. Hint: it's not celery. Featuring The Easiest Winter Soup Recipe in the Whole Wide World!

People seem to care about this sort of thing, so I thought I'd write a blog about it.

I don't weigh or measure my food, control portion sizes, count calories or any of that stuff, and haven't for years! (I don't even weigh myself.) I think the "calories in vs calories out" model is reductionist and doesn't take into account that e.g. eating 500 calories' worth of avocado has a different effect on my body than eating 500 calories' worth of Quality Street.

I have found that when it comes to maintaining my healthy size 8 figure through food choices, quality is more important than quantity.

I.e: I can eat as much as I like in quantity, as long as the quality of the food is high, without gaining weight.

"High quality" = natural, nutrient-rich, high-fibre

"Poor quality" = heavily processed, low in nutrients, low-fibre

I'm not a dietician so all I can really talk about is what works for me at this time of year. And here it is :)

Breakfast

I have the same breakfast most days- a cup of warm water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed in, a pint of water to wash down a good quality probiotic, and about 1 - 1.5 pints of Glowing Green Smoothie. Green is a festive colour, so I guess you could serve green smoothies with wide red paper straws or something if you were in charge of breakfast on Christmas Day (maybe as a starter if you're catering for people who will also be expecting bacon and eggs!).

Mid-morning

Homemade spiced latte and a couple of satsumas. I really associate these flavours with Christmas! Other traditional Christmas fruits that seem to pop up in various re-enactments of A Christmas Carol are oranges, red grapes and red apples.

I make my latte by frothing up hot almond and coconut milk with espresso and allspice, then sweetening with raw honey. If you don't have a coffee machine, you could just warm all the ingredients up together in a small pan, using ordinary coffee from a cafetiere, with the option of frothing it by whipping it up in a blender before serving. It makes it come out really foamy and delish! And if you rinse the blender straight away, you don't really have to wash it up :p #bachelorettefrog (Not recommended if using dairy milk! No-one wants an accidentally cheesy blender.)

If you don't like hot drinks, you could blend frozen cranberries with water and Truvia to make a cranberry smoothie that makes you pee a lot = makes your tummy flatter. It's a standard trick used by Hollywood actresses when preparing for red carpet appearances.

Lunch

I make soup all the time. It's one of the few things I'm good at cooking. A nice easy winter warmer is leek and potato, which is simply boiled potatoes (no need to peel) + leek boiled in vegetable stock + blender. Leeks and potatoes are particularly cheap and good quality right now because they're in season. The potato makes the texture really creamy, so you don't need to add anything else except sea salt and pepper.

The Easiest Winter Soup Recipe in the Whole Wide World
  1. Chop and boil 2 medium-sized potatoes (no need to peel).
  2. Chop and boil a leek in vegetable stock.
  3. Add the cooked veggies and stock to a blender with a generous pinch of sea salt and pepper. Blend while pressing a tea towel on the lid to avoid accidents.
  4. Pour the soup back into a big pan on the lowest heat setting and add more seasoning to taste. Done!

I make a fish-free version of the traditional seafood salad at Christmas- Dharma's Kale Salad, which still has that sea-freshness from the dulse and dill, and uses local kale, which is in season at this time of year. I like a BIG helping ^_^ You can use grated carrot instead of sprouts, or whatever other veggies you like.

Another thing I'm actually good at making is chocolate truffles. It's easier than it sounds. I melt coconut milk, coconut oil and dark chocolate together in a pan, then take it off the heat and stir in a few drops of vanilla essence. Then I just pour the mixture into a baking dish lined with baking paper and put it in the freezer to set. Sometimes I mix fruit and nuts in there too. The texture is always much better than just eating dark chocolate straight out of the pack, and it's so rich I can only manage one or two pieces for dessert.

Mid-afternoon

I avoid caffeine after lunch, and besides, there are so many great Christmas spicy teas to choose from! My favourite is Pukka Vanilla Chai, which doesn't contain black tea, so it's naturally caffeine-free. I also like to bake mince pies the easy way, with a pack of Jus-Rol shortcrust pastry and a jar of ready-made mincemeat.

Dinner

I so relate to this ad ;)

I know plenty of models who eat meat, and roast turkey must be one of the healthiest meat choices available. Still, I prefer to stick with my veggies :) It makes the meal digest more easily for me, and my tummy feel flatter afterwards. I like all the traditional trimmings, mind: sage and onion stuffing, my homemade Yorkshire puddings, a glass of red wine, floury roast potatoes, mashed root veg, kale, broccoli, carrots and super thick English gravy ^_^ Just looking at Brussels sprouts sets off my gag reflex, however D:

No, no, no, no, no.

Hot mince pies fresh from the oven, drizzled with oat or coconut cream and served with sherry in pretty vintage glasses is the perfect dessert to send everyone into a post-dinner food coma in front of the TV ^_^ This year I have a couple of individual-sized Christmas puddings in the cupboard for anyone that wants one. I do like the spectacle of setting a pudding on fire before eating it but then I do also feel like I'm going to die after rounding off a roast dinner with a dense, microwaved pudding, so...

Give yourself the gift of self-hate this Christmas :p

In the evening I like to make hot coconut buttered rum or mull some wine, which makes the house smell even more amazing, light some candles, curl up in front of an open fire with my cats and take time to really appreciate the company I'm with. I like to feel happy and healthy, and not be distracted by a tummy ache or wondering just how hard I'm going to have to restrict in January. I put out bowls of mixed nuts and Medjool dates for people to snack on, but there is always leftover smoothie, soup, salad, roasties and mince pies for anyone still hungry, too.

So, to summarise, this is pretty much my standard Christmas eating:

Breakfast: lots of water and a green smoothie.
Mid-morning: nut milk latte and fruit.
Lunch: huge salad and homemade soup with one or two chocolate truffles for dessert.
Mid-afternoon: vanilla chai tea and homebaked vegan mince pies.
Dinner: Traditional Christmas dinner minus the turkey and pork with hot mince pies and oat/ coconut cream for dessert.
Evening: mulled wine, nuts, dates, leftovers.

I like reading other people's healthy food ideas, hate being hungry, and am also quite nosey as to how other models and entertainers stay in shape with minimum effort. For anyone out there similar to me, I hope you enjoyed this blog :)

PS: The Winter Wonderland Christmas cards I mentioned in my last blog had a great response and there are now only 2 packs left! If you would like a glamorous twist on the tradition of card-giving this year, and on 100% recycled stock, click here to buy one of the very last packs!

Something for the Bonfire weekend

I like the icy-cool feel of these new Kaori's Latex Dreams shots by Luci Alice, and it seems appropriate now that winter is here!

Makeup and skincare from Mya Minerals and Bareskin Beauty respectively.

If you think you've seen that pose before, you're right... it's one of my favourites from the '40s:

Do you feel a spark? I'm looking forward to bundling up for a firework display in our garden with my home-made Portabello mushroom burgers and sweet potato fries, mmmm! And plenty of mulled cider. This is all assuming my cooker gets delivered tomorrow, otherwise it's houmous all round again :p

Paris in the Spring

The Opera House, Paris: so beautiful, I almost wept. I get very emotional when I see something really transporting and ornate. My slight champagne hangover from Dita's Crazy Show vaporised in an instant! This room didn't so much take my breath away, as knock it right out of my body!

After the opera house, we had a quick coffee opposite at the Grand Hotel, then grabbed a cab for a glass of pink champagne and some caviar at Prunier, a funky art deco seafood restaurant frequented by Dita Von Teese and Jean Paul Gaultier. I don't think about what I'm "allowed" or "not allowed" to eat too much when I'm abroad; I think it's important to enjoy the local specialities to really submerge oneself in the culture.

Anyway, to stick to a strict diet in Paris, one would have to lack a pulse!

Prunier.

A last boutique I had to visit before we left was Caron, where I bought two of these gorgeous swan's down powder puffs. I am collecting beautiful objects for my dressing table at Peng Towers :) I don't have the actual dressing table itself yet, but whatever... for now I have a dreamy peach powder puff for my future dressing table, and a miniature baby pink one for my present makeup case. They are the softest things I have ever ever touched!

I also took away some French perfume samples, including one that smells just like fresh pink roses, my favourite flower.

Our last stop before picking up our cases from the concierge and leaving for the airport was the Musée de l'érotisme, which had two whole floors dedicated to late C19th and early C20th erotica, including lots of vintage photographs of the the ladies of the night of Pigalle, and real 1920s pornography playing on a loop on TV screens!

"Gigolettes" of the 1890s- the lack of makeup was compensated for by every kind of lace, silk, velvet, ribbon, pearls, corsetry and other intricate lingerie, and any other glamorous trimming you can think of!

One thing I learned at the Musée de l'érotisme is that the moment cameras were invented, the first thing people did was use them to record sex, and pictures of beautiful naked women. At the time, brothels were perfectly legal in Paris and many had stunningly beautiful ornate interiors with the ladies who worked there sometimes wearing ballgowns in sumptuous fabrics as well as the more expected lingerie (or nothing but shoes!). It seems that high heels, stockings, garters, lace, corsets, gloves, waved hair, smoky eyes and round bums have been sexy since at least the 1890s!

Now to catch up with emails! Au revoir for now x

Le weekend

Let me tell you all about my Easter weekend in gay Parree!

I finally made time to go on a long-overdue holiday to one of my favourite cities, Paris. All I can think about when I'm here is La Belle Epoque, the Roaring Twenties, artists and courtesans drinking absinthe in art nouveau bars, the "leg shows" at the Opera House, the New Look, Jean Paul Gaultier...

Photographer: GSC4X | Skincare: Bareskin Beauty | Cosmetics: Mya Minerals

Pink hotel room! :D One thing I love about Paris is that decor- no neutrals, plain carpets or magnolia paint in sight! No-one is afraid to try and make a room special in Paris.

After a well-deserved lie-in at a little Baroque hotel I found online, where the rooms are named after glamour icons from Parisian history like Mistinguett and Coco Chanel, Boyfy and I went for brunch at Mariage Frères, an exotic tea salon from the C19th. We shared "Le Classique", but were so full, we still had to take the sakura blossom dessert away to share at the hotel later!

I love floral scents, so I purchased a box of rose and violette tea called Swan Lake, which will look really pretty brewing in my French press at home when I have the girls round ;)

We managed to sneak into Laperouse when it was closed at midday, for a little unofficial guided tour:

I also visited Notre Dame for the first time, which was as spooky and impressive as I'd imagined from Victor Hugo's book. I wanted to learn more about the history of Paris, so we visited the museum in the crypt.

One of the highlights of the trip so far has been dinner at Maxim's, an art nouveau restaurant and my favourite in Paris. The owner who made Maxim's so wildly popular at the turn of the century did so by ensuring the restaurant was always full of well-dressed women in all manner of lace, diamonds, velvets and ribbons, tactically seated in the windows facing the street. Jean Cocteau wrote that
"To undress one of these women is like an outing that calls for three weeks' advance notice, it's like moving house."
Hilarious!

We ordered absinthe and champagne with our meal, the drinks of choice during La Belle Epoque, and it gave me a happy little buzz to listen to the pianist play and imagine how many grand dames and dandies had enjoyed the same drinks in the very same room since the late C19th...

The Bar at Maxim's

On Sunday, we went for tea and a single Marie Antoinette macaroon to share at Ladurée (I just wanted to taste). I like the Ladurée at Harrod's, but you can't beat the real thing in Paris.

The good weather lasted just long enough for a pretty boat ride along the river, where we got our first really clear view of the Eiffel Tower. Wow! Everywhere you look in Paris, there's beauty all around.

New art nude, the lovely bones

I love thoughtful, slightly abstract art nude work that encourages you to see the human body with a different perspective than you might normally. Case in point: this beautiful exhibition image by Ian Farrell. I really enjoyed working with Ian and hope to do more with him soon.

Skincare by Bareskin Beauty

Today is a "beauty day" in preparation for near-constant touring between now and Christmas. For any photographer who might read my blog and would like to work with me, these are the only dates I have left available this year. Next year is looking pretty rammed right up until April, too, so I'd advise grabbing one of these dates if you possibly can:

  1. Wednesday 9 December- Cambridgeshire- full day available
  2. Saturday 12 December, 3.20 - 6.20pm @ Art Asylum Studio, Weymouth, Dorset, £150 all-inclusive
  3. Sunday 13 December, morning only- anywhere between Plymouth and Perranporth, Devon/ Cornwall
That's it!

Now it's time to get a full body wax, a vintage half-moon manicure for the Hollywood Glamour workshop I'm modelling for tomorrow, dye my hair, and put on a lovely green Bareskin Beauty face mask while I pack my new hot pink Diane Von Furstenberg suitcase with extra props and goodies ^_^

I might also make some of this stuff today, if I have time; it looks divine, and I'm sure the photographers at the workshop wouldn't mind testing it for me :)

Obscurae magazine beauty editorial

'Black Water' beauty editorial shot by Phine Ka in high fashion magazine Obscurae, November '15 issue. Skincare by Bareskin Beauty, makeup by Mya Minerals :)

This shoot was right at the end of a tour and I was so tired I nearly drowned in the tub :p

Lovely Mr & Mrs Phine Ka took me out for a huge huge mushroom burger and French fries afterwards (sorry, Juliette) at one of those Gourmet Burger Kitchen-type places.

I love making art with my friends.

And eating fries.

Bath night!

I'm on tour round Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Nottingham and Bristol atm, so Friday was spent prepping for 8-9 days of shooting:

  • Full body wax (ow, but worth it!)
  • Mani/ pedi (my favourite part)
  • Dyeing hair
  • Shaping eyebrows
  • Working out hard all this week! Lots of yoga, Pilates and tai chi :)
  • Laundry
  • Cleaning makeup brushes
  • Getting the car valeted (I'm in it a LOT)
  • Booking hotel rooms
  • Packing
  • Buying bunny slippers (most important)
  • Going on a date :)

This photo was taken by lovely Glenn Cockerill at a beautiful C13th stately manor here in Somerset last month :) I did the hair and makeup using Bareskin Beauty skincare and Mya Minerals makeup.

My slippers and I are currently staying with my good friend Ivory Flame in Leicester. We watched The Conjuring last night after a nice little Lunar Samhain dinner and both ended up hiding under the duvet, screaming. The soup was great, though.

Lady Allura's Latex & Fabulously Fetish shot by Steve Prue in NYC. 18+! Photo-heavy.

Some badass photos from my Lady Allura's Latex and Fabulously Fetish shoes shoot with Steve Prue in NY in March last year, when I learned why New York models are so skinny- they don't get time to eat!

I was rushing all over Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey for shoots during my trip there. I managed to get breakfast every morning, usually carrying my cup of peppermint tea with me on the subway in the eco carry cup that was in my LFW goodie bag, but then often didn't manage to get lunch running between shoots in the middle of the day, and then was often so exhausted on returning to my hotel that I'd simply wash my face and pass out in bed by 7.30pm.

I started to notice on the back of photographers' cameras that I was starting to look a bit twiggy, even to my eyes, and I occasionally see it in this photo set, even though the lighting is fairly high-key. Nonetheless, I really like that I got the opportunity to work on such an American-looking set while visiting the States, and I think these photos are in a completely different style and show a completely different side of me than usually shows up in photos. I'd like it to be a magazine editorial some day :)

PS: I viewed a lovely apartment in Glastonbury today. I might end up buying it ^_^
